MIC NAMES PANEL TO DISCUSS 'INTERLOK' WITH EDUCATION MINISTRY
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 (Bernama) -- The MIC has proposed a five-man panel to discuss with the education ministry to bring an end to sensitive issues raised in the Malay literature novel, ''Interlok''.
They are Hindu Sangam president R. S. Mohan Shan, former head of University Malaya''s Indian Studies Department Dr S. Singaravelu, current head Associate Professor Dr S. Kumaran, MIC education bureau chairman Datuk Dr T. Marimuthu and former education ministry official G. Krishnabagwan.
In a statement today, MIC president Datuk G. Palanivel said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had requested the party to take the lead in forming the panel.
"The five panelists will sit with officials of the Ministry of Education to review the sensitive contents of the book," he said.
Palanivel said MIC would formally submit the names to Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also education minister.
Previously, the party had stated that changes should be made to the novel before it was used as a literature textbook by form five students this year.
The MIC had said that the caste system mentioned in the novel was sensitive to Indians and would not meet objectives with its usage. ''Interlok'', written by National Laureate Abdullah Hussain, is based on the integration of the Malays, Chinese and Indians from early 1900 until Merdeka.
